She became the first Mexican author to win the María Teresa León International Prize for female playwrights 2004 in Spain, for her play “Pequeñas certezas” (Little Certainties) which was published in Spain, Mexico and England.

Colio begins her theatre career as an actress in 1988. Since 1997, she is fully dedicated to the playwriting. Barbara studied in “La escuela de Letras de Madrid, Spain” and afterwards she is invited to the Royal Court Theatre International Residency for Emerging Playwrights in London. In 2002, she became a resident writer in The Writers Room of New York.

Sponsored by the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, she writes “La Habitación” (The Room) which won the Baja California Literature Prize and was premiere during the HOWL! Festival, in Manhattan, NY. During this 2008, three of her plays will be premiered in Mexico City, Tijuana BC, and Austin Texas.

She developed a workshop named Inside Drama, focused in the text analysis and playwriting experimentation, in several Mexican cities and shortly in US.

Actually, is a member of the “Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte” in Mexico.
