Playwright.

Member of the “Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte” in Mexico. She became the first Mexican playwright to win the María Teresa León International Prize for female playwrights 2004 in Spain, for her play “Pequeñas certezas”(Little Certainties) which was published in three countries and premiered in México, England, United States and Perú.

Colio begins her theatre career as an actress in 1988 in Baja Califronia. and since 1997, she is fully dedicated to the playwriting. Barbara studied in “La Escuela de Letras de Madrid, Spain” and afterwards she is invited to the Royal Court Theatre International Residency for Emerging Playwrights in London. Also, in 2002, she became a resident writer in The Writers Room of New York.

Sponsored by the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, she writes “La Habitación” (The Room) which won the Baja California Literature Prize and was premiere during the HOWL! Festival, in Manhattan, NY. Recently, she won the Mexican Playwriting Award “Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda 2009” and the Premio a Mejor Obra Periodística por la Asociación de Periodistas Teatrales 2010 for her play “You are Here”. In the same year, she won the National  Avard “Premio Nacional de Bellas Artes 2009” for her play “Strings”. Actually, she have more than 15 plays published. At 2010, Colio’s work won the grant of Fondo Iberoamericano Iberescena 2011.    

She developed a playwriting-workshop named DramaInside, focused in the text analysis and the playwriting experimentation, given in several Mexican cities, Perú, and United States.
